How science can explain everything without explaining much at all

Posted on

In the sense that science envelops the entirety of the observable universe under its theoretical framework, reduces all observations to its concepts and provides insight into all objects and phenomena unavailable to direct observation, we can see clearly that we are unjustified in believing as such as even the simple task of understanding a leaf proves titanic once we realize that it contains incomprehensibly many atoms by any human or machine.

Given that science can not explain things like psychology starting from quantum mechanics, possibly due to our lack of memory, it does however explain abstractions of phenomenon or very simple phenomenon. For example we may not be able to explain falling in love from neurology, but we can correlate it with the secretion of oxytocin. Or we may not be able to predict every position through time of all the atoms of a falling ball, but we can give a rough estimate of its trajectory using Newtonian Mechanics. An example of a simple phenomenon would be electron-electron collision, there is not much else to say about it besides the interaction of two elemental particles.

Some have thought it proper to extend the realm of scientific knowledge over the entire universe. But let us consider a particular class of phenomenon, those which include a large number of unknowns, the falling of a rock off a cliff, the growth of a tree, or even talking to a friend. Let us ask ourselves what if the rock ended up on the left of the cliff instead of on the right? What if the tree had 7 instead of 8 branches? What the dialogue went in a different direction than what it had? Although this would not surprise us, highly rigid laws of motion would most certainly have been broken had any of the previously mentioned occurred. As such our lack of surprise of an event is by no means proof that our explanations held in place, because we had not explained anything to begin with.

Lumina altora
sugrumă vraja nepătrunsului ascuns
în adâncimi de întuneric,
dar eu,
eu cu lumina mea sporesc a lumii taină -
şi-ntocmai cum cu razele ei albe luna
nu micşorează, ci tremurătoare
măreşte şi mai tare taina nopţii,
aşa îmbogăţesc şi eu întunecata zare
cu largi fiori de sfânt mister
şi tot ce-i neînţeles
se schimbă-n neînţelesuri şi mai mari
sub ochii mei-
căci eu iubesc
şi flori şi ochi şi buze şi morminte.
